Career Tips to Accelerate Your Career Success

What Should Senior Professionals Include in a Modern Executive CV?

A modern executive CV needs to demonstrate far more than responsibilities and career progression. At senior level, employers want evidence of leadership impact, strategic influence and measurable results. The strongest CVs therefore tell a clear professional story while making it easy to understand the value an individual could bring to another organisation. Professional guidance on executive CV writing can help ensure your document effectively communicates your true value. This is one reason an executive CV should not simply be a longer version of a standard CV. Greater seniority requires greater selectivity.

What makes an executive CV different?

Senior professionals frequently have 20 or 30 years of experience, creating an obvious challenge: deciding what deserves space.

Trying to include everything can weaken the document. Earlier positions may provide useful context, but recent and strategically relevant achievements should receive considerably more attention.

The opening profile is particularly important. It should establish your level, areas of expertise and professional positioning without relying on generic descriptions such as “results-driven leader” or “dynamic executive”.

The employment section should then provide evidence.

Rather than simply saying you were responsible for a division, explain its scale and the difference you made. Revenue growth, profitability improvements, successful transformations, acquisitions, international expansion, operational efficiencies and team development can all provide useful evidence where relevant.

Numbers help, but measurable impact does not always mean financial figures. Successfully changing organisational culture, building leadership capability or influencing a complex stakeholder environment can be equally significant.

Building a clear leadership narrative

An executive CV should also demonstrate progression. The reader should be able to see how your responsibilities, influence and contribution have developed throughout your career.

Context is important. A 15% improvement means considerably more when the reader understands the scale and circumstances behind it. Briefly explaining the challenge can therefore make an achievement much more persuasive.

Strategic influence should be visible too. Senior executives are rarely employed simply to perform a function. They shape direction, make difficult decisions, influence boards and stakeholders, develop people and help organisations respond to change.

Presentation matters, but there is no universal rule that every executive CV must fit onto two pages. For an experienced senior leader, three pages can be perfectly appropriate when the content justifies the additional space. Relevance and clarity are more important than an arbitrary page count.

At Executive Connexions, we assist senior leaders in crafting compelling CVs that answer a straightforward question: why should an organisation want to meet this person? Every section should contribute towards that answer.
