Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Ric Robinson-Horley, and having had a varied and eclectic career consider myself well-suited to advise senior executives making the next move in their career and also to show them how to market themselves in a very competitive marketplace.

What was your first job?

As a teenager, I worked on a building site to finance travel around the US, but my first ‘proper’ job was as a Trainee Manager at the Standard Bank of West Africa.

What are you most proud of in your career?

Raising the finance for my own restaurant/bar in Budapest, Hungary, having been trained in all aspects of the hospitality industry in the US and Canada.

What or who has inspired you?

My father who, after a career as a regular soldier went on to become a Board Director of Lucas Defence Systems and one of the most supreme networkers in the corporate world.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned?

Remain focussed and don’t give up! Oh, and don’t mix with losers.

What is the biggest professional challenge you have faced?

Taking the leap in my early 30s and starting my own company. It gave me the chance to make many mistakes but I revelled in the freedom.

Social media – friend or foe?

Very much a friend, (if you want it to be and are not afraid of it!)

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Treat people well and they’ll respond in return.

What advice would you give now to a senior executive looking for their next career move?

Take the blinkers off and look around you – there are many opportunities available if you have faith in yourself. Don’t put yourself in a box.

Looking back on your career so far, what would you change?

Nothing. I was lucky to experience good and bad events in my business life and I have learnt lessons from both. My experience in different sectors has been invaluable when advising clients and I have enjoyed working with many interesting and fascinating people.
